Giles about to graduate from the Watchers' Academy with his fellow pupils got me all nostalgic. Again.
From a Q&A with Georges Jeanty on Buffy Season Nine
"You've mentioned that you based some of the new characters on actors, such as James McAvoy for the character that is still to be introduced."
Eeeeee.

So I marked the passing of the previous DC Universe by watching the first episodes of the Batman and Superman Animated Series and buying issue 1 of Dark Horse's Angel & Faith. (And I'd have bought Secret Avengers, a Marvel comic written by Warren Ellis, but it wasn't in.)
To be fair, I probably would have bought the new Batman or Grant Morrison's Action Comics if they'd been in. It seems odd that of The New 52, only the Justice League seems to actually come out on launch day.
But ultimately, I like my DCU to be animated. (And I like my Marvel U to be live-action from their studio.)

Now one short of completion, Buffyverse Trailers
Nice little snapshots of each season - tending to a minute too long and spoilery to show to people who hadn't seen the season in question before, although the Buffy and Angel S1 ones would work, and I like the varying tones from Buffy S1's bouncy comedy all the way to the no-fun-at-all-except-the-last-gag fantasy action drama of the new Angel S4 one. Because, hey, Angel S4 is pretty much no fun.
Something to think about as I slowly bolt together Nationals Buffy characters. How much do I rely on the players to bring the funny and action and heartache in response to an otherwise horrible world of monsters and stuff? Back in the day, the answer in TWH was "quite a lot", with me providing setups for heroic smackdowns and feedlines for gags, and the odd funny line from friendly NPCs, because I knew they could and would. Not a luxury I have here, of course. So I load on relationship issues and sample hopefully amusing lines on the character briefings...

Buffy The Vampire Slayer: Season Eight
Jan. 19th, 2011 07:25 pmJoss open letter spoilery thing
Joss interview spoilery thing
Gratuitous Inception-soundtracked trailer.
The last issue's out. Looping back to the first, and to Welcome To the Hellmouth, as well as looking ahead and bringing one more surprise. (Edmund?)
In time for Buffy's birthday. She's thirty. How did that happen?
It's been a long, strange ride. When it started The Watch House was still ongoing, we had a Prime Minister who'd actually been elected rather than the two since who haven't, Heroes was still good(!) and Firefly was the last TV show Joss had created.
I'm tempted to go back over the forty issues and spinoffs and one-shots and see what a twenty-two-episode TV-type season would look like, with four-part stories becoming an episode or two depending on how much stuff happens in them.
Things I liked, things I didn't like, things that made me go pouty lip - comics can't make me cry but they can make me go pouty lip - for good or ill, nice slightly cartoony art that sometimes felt too bright and bouncy for the subject matter and rarely helped the atmosphere, things that seemed wonky for the setting and also things that were awesomes.
Not my favourite season but not my least (guess which!) either.
Dunno where it would put post-S8 spinoffs. It's one of those "what now?" hiatuses until season nine, rather than one of those "carry on regardless" ones. Not that I'm planning to go back to the ol' Buffyverse any time soon, 'cept for one-shots an' PBPs an' such which can all float in non-specific timeframes as granted by the almost-four-year-long season.

On the whole, not what I'd go for.
Well, I like the KT Tunstall song. And the song Joss chose by someone I'd never heard of.
And they missed a trick by not linking to the Firefly fan vid for Defying Gravity.

This month's Buffy has Harmony (and CLEM!) fronting a reality show. The wider Buffyverse responds very little, because hey, it's a reality show.
Anyway, there's also this eight-page spinoff story and an in-character blog thingy.

Today's issue arrives, and with it a news story that will have 'shippers the world over wailing and gnashing their teeth.
SEASON 8 PHOTOS! ( ...not really.)
Sep. 7th, 2007 03:44 amBeen working on this for a while. The release of issue 6 spurred posting.
Entirely Fake Production Photos From Buffy Season 8

Yep. That's Faith wearing a ballgown alright.
It's a bit internal-monologuey and "I-had-that-idea-for-a-villian"-y, but as the pre-credits and first act of an episode go, it delivers a solid hissable baddie.
And Faith wearing a ballgown.
And then we have Joss papering over a glaring continuity error in the letters page. Ahh, it's like the return of the No-Prize.

The Chain is a pretty compressed story after The Long Way Home. A bit more, and it could feel like an episode by itself - unlike the previous four issues, which feel like about one episode all together.
It has the slight problem of being a story about a lookalike which is being done in art rather than live-action when almost all of the likenesses are a bit wobbly.
( Spoils! )
It does not feature Deep Ones on motorbikes, with their biker helmets full of sea water. That idea came up tonight playing Clandestine for the first time in a month, and it needs a good home. Hmm...
Next issue: Faith, not written by Joss.

Buffy 8.05 preview
Jul. 24th, 2007 07:16 pmThree covers and six pages before the issue comes out here on Thursday.
Faeries. Disgusting creatures.
Faeries. Disgusting creatures.
So, after five issues by Joss, the first person to write an episode of Buffy Season 8 is Runaways creator Brian K. Vaughn.
And these are the covers for the second issue of the story.
So that'll be... interesting.
I wonder if he pitched his first opportunity to write a Buffy story as "well... it's an excuse to have Faith running around in a ballgown."
Like anyone would ever do something like that. (coughcoughCharmed... coughcoughandalsothefairytaleepisodeofmyownseries)

It must be my birthday...

Goblins and Faeries in the Buffyverse? After a giant, that's two of the top ten monsters I listed that who never made it into the TV series covered.
UK RPG Day. Even more poorly advertised than the American one this weekend. But happening anyway.
