If you ever want a demonstration of what effect a different GM can have on a game...

Starting with Sir Peter Jackson's most obvious cameo following concerns his last one was invisible, this rampages generally entertainingly through a mostly familiar story, throwing in subplots and new characters and tie-ins and gags.

Didn't like the song over the credits, but never mind.

Bonus: A sneak preview of C7's Hobbit Tales storytelling card game.

About ten minutes of extraneous LOTR-connection-building so far, not that much in 2 3/4 hours.

Radagast raises the setting's Weird Level by a click or two.

"The bit with the ladder!" may be the new "the bit on the stairs!"

Riddles In The Dark almost word-for-word.

Didn't spot Sir Peter, did hear the Wilhelm Scream.

Didn't see it 48fps, can't comment there, looked lovely in regular 2D.

So it turns out Peter Jackson didn't make the first live-action adaptation of Lord Of The Rings. Just the first in English. And very possibly the first that was actually legal.

Hobitit - Finnish for "Hobbits"

Featuring Ninja Boromir.

Whoa.

The Hobbit vlog - in 3D!

Well, about 3D really. But one bit is in red/blue 3D. And it's rather surprising.

Remember how a year ago I was in New Zealand and went to the in-progress Hobbiton set/location tour? And had to sign something saying I couldn't share the pictures?

Well, as of today AICN has these pics up. So I feel I can post this one I got now. I have like twenty more, but that can wait another year.

OH YES!

I have now looked through the signed (!) copy of The One Ring Cat brought me (thanks!) and checked the free playtester pdf Angus sent a link for (thanks!) so I feel reasomably well informed on how the game finally turned out.

It looks great, John Howe covers and splash pages, Jon Hodgson and Tomasz Jedruszek internal art, yellowing paper effects, thick slipcase, funky dice (but only one is really funky), big maps...

Lots of focus on the emotional effects of adventuring, danger and greed, more than I'd have expected as I always figured the Ring to be unusual in that respect but "dragon-sickness" is a feature too. It looks like it could be as important as Sanity in Cthulhu.

And there's my name in the playtester page at the back!

Thanks to Cat attending GenCon, I now have The One Ring, about which more later, and a funny Doctor Who T-shirt that I won't spoiler you on.

We were at the Book Festival to see Neil Gaiman talk with Audrey Niffenegger about fairytales, how myths decay into fairytales, how characters in fairytales generally only have one defining characteristic - "this character eats people! And you don't really ask why..." and how heroines have to be brave and clever and patient while heroes tend to just inherit things, and about stories getting away with you and how that was informed by ten years writing comics and how "you have let the cool stuff in", and about how Steven Moffat stopped the "hypothetically speaking..." part of the Doctor Who writing conversation "by saying "Oh, Rude Scottish Word it, you know." ... Yes, it was fuck." And aout why Amy and Rory didn't think to hold hands, which he discusses in the DVD commentary.

It then took a mere hour and a half to get through the signing queue. Picture by kind person behind me, who I hopefully managed to likewise photograph on her smartphone. I resisted the temptation to post the one that caught me looking up at the ceiling as the rain really started hammering.

in motion.

Among other things, like Gollum's cave and Rivendell.

Feeling bunged up, feel rather better now.

Aidan Turner looking recognisable and Mitchell-y is a bit weird.

Nori, Ori and Dori from Peter Jackson's Facebook page.

Enormo version

Now with added Oin and Gloin

Nori, Ori and Dori were always the three of the thirteen I could never remember the names of. So that's a question for next year's Conpulsion pub quiz sorted...

As linked by Storn from his entry, and featuring contributions by TOR's Jon Hodgson, 350 or so pieces and comments on an art forum for Eowyn Versus The Witch-King.

A bunch o' links to Empire and YerTube.

The Hobbit cast, albeit not in character. Check out Aidan Turner's beardiness.

Our own James McAvoy among others being all mutant-y in 1962.

Aaaaahahahahaha! Not remotely SFW. Um, anyway, Captain America has a good cast and director.
