Vampire: The Miniatures

Nosferatu-type Ghouls here. In hoodies (like Hunters in Left 4 Dead) and clambering out of sewers. Found while searching idly for Buffy miniatures, through here.

Not that I use miniatures (a) more than about once every five years or (b) ever for World Of Darkness games, but I still likes the toys, I does...

Nosferatu are the trickiest clan to get suitable figures for, of course, although there are plenty of original Nosferatu Orlok himself. Mantic Ghouls are lovely multipart figures for less modern examples.

The other clans can be represented by regular miniatures painted with an undead pallor and dark clothes - trenchcoats and katanas optional.

Ral Partha actually produced official classic World Of Darkness miniatures, most of whom seemed to have their arms in the air for some reason. I got the Tremere two-pack and never got around to painting them. RAFM meanwhile produced the, er, not dissimilar Fantastique Noir: Vampyre line - the Nosferatu gangster inspired a character in a game a while later. For the new World Of Darkness there are only the clan miniatures for the boardgame Prince Of The City based on the first edition Requiem clan characters.

Were I so inclined, I’d start with this list...

(And for the record, Hasslefree, Artizan and Character Options provided miniatures for The Watch House...)

For twenty-one years now, the name "Sullivan Dane" for the religious monster-hunter in Vampire: The Masquerade has vaguely bothered me, because British, and never met or heard of anyone British with Sullivan as a first name. Why is he called that?

Then looking at blackhatmatt's new book Dust To Dust this afternoon, I realised (and RMB has now kindly confirmed) that it's a reference to Solomon Kane.

I have never read the stories, but I saw the film when it came out a couple years ago, and have been at least vaguely aware of the character since something like 1986.

So, yeah... I feel real smart right now.

The Onyx Path stretches before us. New Mummy, New Demon, revised Exalted, Samuel Haight: Year One...

And the Trinity universe has a bit in the forum...

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is a fascinating folly, taking that premise entirely seriously (there are four jokes in the film, one being the title) to the point that its blaming historical tragedies on vampires without a hint of levity is at least dubiously tasteful. It takes pains not to blame slavery on vampires, while happily blaming them for other things.

Still, at least most of it is in focus.

LEGO Monster Fighters

Playing the classic horror crossover for laughs, as well as for toys.

I particularly like that the villainous plot was actually attempted in Vampire: The Masquerade back in the day. And Lord Vampyre's clearly annoyed bride.

(And just did the math on the parts I'd need to make TWH characters... about ten to twelve quid each.)

Well, I had a free ticket.

... Oh, alright. It looked nice. And there were some funny things in it. It's just that all but about two of them were in the trailer.

(Which is an improvement for the writer, whose books have all their jokes in the title.)

My piece on the Vampire: The Masquerade 20th anniversary retrospective.

Dracula, and the uses of him and other vampires in RPGs.

And there was a plan for Matt to run Buffy at or around GEAS over summer, but he's now thinking in other directions. So naturally I stick my hand up and say "I could run Buffy while you run something else."

I haven't done it for more than a one-shot since the heady days of TWH and at least two of the target audience haven't actually watched the show, although they liked Firefly, so I feel like I'll be guiding them around a great and much-loved gallery without a map.

So, er... anybody got an idea to spare?

Underworld Awakening could have really done with a joke somewhere. Like, one even.

Something I've wanted three films running actually happens! Admittedly only for about five minutes.

Nice uses of 3D, mostly in the first few minutes but scattered here and there.

A somewhat clever plot, just in the background.

Humans have lines! Always a surprise.

Charles Dance doing a great Viktor impression.

(Still, that whole sequence would have been more fun with an old friend of Selene's popping up in charge of the hidden vampires, like our Soph as Erika, understandably pissed off with her turning up after twelve years of peace and quiet and bringing action sequences to her doorstep.)

Nice soundtrack CD, which is previewed in the end credits rather than actually in the film to any degree.

Trenchcoat-love amusingly lampshaded. So there are some funny moments, but they're all at the expense of the material and I wonder how many were actually intentional.

Blarg.

Trailers: The Woman In Black, something with Denzel Washington teaming up with Ryan Reynolds to shoot lots of people, John Carter, Ghost Rider apparently being the first example in some time of a reboot with the same star, Star Wars 1 3D.

DriveThru link here - the first adventure for V20, set in VTM's original background.

[livejournal.com profile] innocent_man brings us back to Gary, Indiana to visit such old friends as Modius, Juggler and Dane. And from my reading, delivers a viable and intriguing adventure about vampires stuck in a dead-end town even without the nostalgia factor working for it (an adventure of this title was announced twenty years ago, which may be some kind of record).

Propulsion update: as of 10pm we had 31 people in by my reckoning. I'll be back by 11am to see who's still functional.

The Skies They Were Ashen And Sober

Part of A Night In The Lonesome October. Hey, it's still October where the organiser is!

Last one. Couldn't resist.

Vampire: The Requiem is go, Uncharted not. More players in the evening than afternoon. That's fine. (sniffle)

Happy birthday dad!
