A Girl Called Mars
Jul. 13th, 2006 01:55 amVeronica Mars that is.
Thanks to the sterling efforts of Doktor S at rooting out a series buried in a non-channel in Cableland, I'm working my way through the first season of the show hailed as Teh Best Thing EVAR by Uncle Joss and...
It's smart, funny, fairly quotable, kinda cool but not trying to be way cool, has an immediately likeable hero and supporting cast. The only regular I want to punch is the one I'm supposed to want to punch.
I think the Mystery Story elements can be a bit rushed - they sometimes get about as much time as routine patrolling would on Buffy, but because they're plot and dialogue rather than just fighting and snarky one-liners they seem like they should be given more weight. And there's a heavy-duty seasonal arc a-brewing, which definitely deserves the weight it's getting but that might make the other mysteries seem even littler.
In the event that it reaches a less nonexistent channel (Living? Seriously? Living?!) or I get the (R1) DVD set, check it.
And check their theme song.

It's awesome-tastic!
Date: 2006-07-13 10:20 am (UTC)There's nothing I dislike about Veronica Mars, except that only two seasons have been produced so far. There was only one character I felt very "meh" about, but even he was redeemed (figuratively speaking) half-way through the second season.
Buh-rilliant! Must have DVD set. With a little luck, it'll get released here around christmas. :)

Date: 2006-07-15 11:40 am (UTC)What I meant was, that VM has many of the same qualities that attracted me to Buffy without all the faults I grudgingly tolerated about that show.
F'rex, none of this thinly veiled mysandry or obnoxious glorification of the main character. And secondary (even tertiary characters) get their own subplots and character development.
Also, it's noir! I LOVE NOIR!
