I borrowed and watched Queen Of The Damned on DVD. (Thanks to Nicole.) It's a distinct curate's egg - good in parts. It's obvious that it's a shortened mishmash of elements from two books by the number of dangling plot hooks and casual conveniences. Some things are so cut back that they might as well have been dropped completely. An ancient order of occult observers are there purely to provide a character with a book, and it takes some shocking Basil Exposition dialogue to manage this feat, and the final battle is oddly pedestrian, not helped by the not very sympathetic protagonist. On the other hand, the soundtrack is a huge benefit (which the DVD producers rightly acknowledge, presenting three of The Vampire Lestat's videos complete, and very clever two of them are as well) and it generally looks good. My disbelief was never suspended, but I generally had fun.

In other movie news, expect The Hours to get lots of Oscars unless the Academy feels wildly frivolous and hands more out to Chicago. And no, Andy Serkis wasn't nominated for Best Supporting Actor as Gollum. Bah, humbug.
